Servo or stepper ?
Automa uses only servo drives for industrial CNC Routers and CNC Plasma cutting machines, as stepper motors do not possess required resolution and speed for demanding applications. Our servos are also equipped with absolute encoders, which retains position even after power loss. You can start where you left.

Rack-and-pinion vs ballscrew ?

Automa uses both systems on all of our machines. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Ball screws are smooth and friction-free. They also have lower backlash than rack&pinion systems. But over 1500mm axis, a ball screw-driven system is susceptible to “screw whip”, which is vibration that worsens as the screw rotates faster. Rack-and-pinion drives are not limited by the length of driven axis. When installed properly, they provide years of use with negligible wear and are not affected by dust and debris. A rack-and-pinion drive can be geared with planetary reducers to best utilize speed and torque. Rack-and-pinion’s disadvantages include higher friction and potential backlash if the pinion is not properly engaged to the rack.

Do I need to learn a programming language like G Code to operate a CNC router ?

Not really. Most modern CAD software allows you to design, and generate the G-code that the controller will use to mill your parts.

What size machine is best for me ?

If you are not limited by your budget and the size of your shop, larger table means larger lengths of material and less unusable scrap, cost savings of purchasing material in larger sizes, less time spent on cutting material down to size to make it fit your machine. But if you are in a small shop with a limited budget, you only want to make small parts, a small machine will likely do you just fine. But ask yourself, How about 5 years from now?

What software do I need ?

When you invest in a CNC router machine, you want the right router software driving it to maximize productivity and avoid downtime due to costly errors. There are many options available today.

Anyone with a CNC router, from the home hobbyist to professional manufacturers, requires ease, speed, and reliability of software. For many applications Artcam and Alphacam are popular softwares.

How Much Spindle Speed and Power Do I Need ?

Spindles come with many options on speeds and power. The type and thickness of your material, the type of tools you’re using will determine what type of spindle you need. Please contact us to choose that is best for you.
